Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

Well folks, here's where it all started. I was in grade five.
Horses

Horse   "Horses are my favourite animal because they are kind and gentle. If I had a horse I would not put a bit in his mouth or blinkers on the side of his head or put steel shoes on him because they do not like it. I would not put a saddle on him. For you wouldn't like it if you had a peice of steel in your mouth or a heavy saddle on your back or shoes nailed into your feet. Would you? No, I wouldn't that's for sure."
By Val Rainey - Grade 5

1964-1965

Comment by my mom…..
"Val wrote this sometime ago for school -- after reading Black Beauty. Had meant to send in on before."

Comment by my grandmother…
"This is a nicely organized composition. It states a premise. It follows through with three statements, then uses the three to express the writers convictions. It asks and answers a retorical question. It has a concluding statement. I would suggest giving this child a sturdy notebook and encouraging her to write something every day, if only a couple sentences. Who knows she might make her name in journalisam field."

All above material enclosed in quotation marks are exact transcript of original including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
