Val Rainey's BIO
Purple Daisy   On a cold and wintry night in December 1953 I was let loose on a totally unsuspecting world in Brandon, Manitoba.

Yes, I was raised an 'army brat'. My early life was lived in Quebec, Manitoba and Ontario. All of my junior and senior high school years were spent in the then rather out of the way...at least for most of the world...town of Oromocto, New Brunswick which is of course 'connected' with Base Gagetown.

My writing career began in grade five when I wrote a critique of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I was not impressed with the treatment of the horse in part of the story and said so loud and clear. You can read all about it in my portfolio section.

Over the years I have pursued several careers including tutor, farm manager, geological drafter, and tour guide at the Centre for Performing Arts in Calgary, Alberta. I suppose that it's one of the hazards of being a Sagittarius.

I finally came back to my true path in 1996. I picked up my pen and started writing again. I moved to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1999 where I write mostly children's stories and poetry. I also create commissioned pieces for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries and to celebrate the opening of new businesses.

People often ask my why I write. I tell them that it's mostly to keep my sanity. Besides which I love to read and figured that if I write I'll always have something new and exciting to read!

My first major project was a story/colouring book called Sunny's Grand Adventure. Sunny is a daisy who wants to fly! My lovely and talented friend and illustrator Pam Masi and I released Sunny as a strictly limited edition book in December 2004.

Sunny teaches us to realize that when we know in our heart that we are right and the rest of the world thinks we're slightly crazy…that's its problem.

Keeping me very busy now and for a long time to come is The Canadian Writing and Illustrating Centre. We (Pam, Peggy and I and who ever else would love to join us) will be both an online and very soon a physical location providing workshops and information.

When my head starts spinning from too much writing or I become lost in the story, I relax by reading, taking long walks or doing Reiki.

I hope that you enjoy wandering through our site and visit often. We'd love to hear from you so don't be shy!!

Val
